ICE: In Case of Emergency

From Wanda Lust, a pretty good idea:

Following the disaster in London on Thursday, a national campaign to help emergency service workers identify and contact family members has gathered national attention. The concept of ICE (In Case of Emergency) is simple: enter the acronym ICE into your mobile phone contact list, along with the name and numbers of someone you'd like to be contacted in the event of an emergency. Emergency staff will then know who to contact on your behalf.

Very interesting initiative from National Geographic. Just the right trusted brand to undertake such a privacy-sensitive project.

London is to Paris like Madrid is to Barcelona?

The Economist recently surveyed how London and Paris measure up against each other. Does the same relationship exist between Madrid and Barcelona? Here are the messages from the Economist (with my thoughts on Madrid/Barcelona in parentheses): - London & Paris are longtime rivals. (yes, definitely the case with Madrid & Barcelona!) - New upgraded rail link is bringing the two cities closer (same in Spain- the new AVE high-speed train makes Madrid-Barcelona just a 2h40 trip) -

New LinkedIn Design Is Really Good

LinkedIn is slowly but surely becoming an absolutely necessary business tool. - News feed. This started out like an aping of Facebook's similar feature, but I've noticed that more and more my contacts are using it to communicate to each other what they're doing, who they're looking for, questions they have. And over time, I've found myself going to LinkedIn to check the home page and see what's new with my business contacts. - LinkedIn Pro profile page is the new cv- that and a blog, and you are all set. oh, and by the way: facebook is simply, incredibly, totally useless. For a while, I kept thinking to myself that surely it's not, that this must be because I'm too old to appreciate it. But I'm pretty sure that it's simply pointless. The features are fantastic, the coding top-notch, but in the end I think they're just too broad and doing too much.

Bush Administration Gets Confused, Raises Tariffs on *Exports*

Any right-minded protectionist puts tariffs on imports to help out domestic industry. It's generally not good economics, but at least the intention is well-meant. But when I see the Bush Administration adding all kinds of additional security and privacy-violating measures for travellers from Europe, it makes me think they've gotten a bit confused in their economic policy. When European residents travel to America, one thing we tend to do is spend money there. On things like hotels, restaurants, and shopping. This is called *tourism*, and it's considered an export of American services. So it makes no sense to *increase barriers* to tourists entering the country to spend money there.
